Lost wax Ceramic Shell

Bronze Casting

Foundry casting and sculpture courses

Alex from London

Have you enjoyed the course, has it met with your expectations?

Ithoroughly enjoyed the rhythm of the work and in particular the time and pace of the ceramic shelling.

At any point on the course were you anxious, unsure or afraid?

No never afraid or anxious

Was the information delivered in such a way as you could understand it easily?

Whilst I grasped the physical making processes, I found some of the technical terms more demanding, there is a lot to take in and its very engrossing.

What did you most like about this course?

Modelling with the wax, the casting procedures, being that close to a very hot furnace and ignoring all animal instinct to run away even with the knowledge that the leather overalls were going to give proper protection.

What did you least like about this course?

Getting rashes from John's horses but that really has little to do with the course!

Is there anything we could improve upon?

If I had asked John to explain more about some of the machines and procedures, three phase machinery and electric -which I found it baffling, I know I would have recieved excellent answers - though I am not convinced they would have stuck in my head though.

Would you recommend this course to other people?

Absolutely. John McKenna's bronze casting course is a practical, hands on experience in the art of ceramic shell bronzecasting. His enthusiasm, natural banter, relaxed and welcoming attitude make the week's course a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I learned a number of transferable skills and can now adapt my making processes accordingly in order to work with other art foundries and cast my own work in the future. By demystifying the processes through demonstrations and later rehearsals for the bronze pour, John eliminates any fears a participant might have. This simultaneously builds confidence and competence. A unique week in scotland, I shall certainly hope to return!
